Material selection criteria were developed to include resource efficiency, renewable source, recycled content, low toxicity and indoor air quality impact. Students helped with research to find new materials on the market that met the selection criteria.

A construction waste management plan specification was developed for the project, emphasizing waste reduction first, followed by material reuse, salvage and recycling before taking any material to a land fill.  This was the first project on the Fort Lewis College campus to use comprehensive waste management.

Indoor air quality is protected by designing for ventilation rates that exceed the ASHRAE 62-1999 standard and specifying low-emitting interior materials for paints, coatings, sealants, adhesives, carpets and composite wood products.
